In the UK our unhealthy modern lifestyle are presenting us with a new health enemy - Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, more commonly known as Type 2 Diabetes. For the most part this condition is entirely preventable. It is thought that the disorder affects over 2 million people in the UK alone. Although it was once referred to as Adult-Onset Diabetes (and also non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus - NIDDM), it is worrying that type 2 is more and more being found in young adults and even children.
This type of diabetes happens when an organ called the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to meet the body's needs or the insulin it does produce is not metabolised properly. Insulin is vital to control the amount of sugar in our blood stream. The condition is characterised by "insulin deficiency", a measure of insulin resistance, and hyperglycaemia.
If you are concerned that you or a family member may be affected by type 2 diabetes you should see your GP to arrange for a diabetes test or purchase an over the counter version from your pharmacy.
