Symptoms of a stomach ulcer  include:-

 

• Pain in your upper abdomen just below the breastbone. This is the most common symptom. It often comes and goes. It may be eased if you take antacid medicines. Eating can make the pain worse and it may wake you from sleep.
• Bloating
• Excessive wind
• Wretching, and feeling queasy or sick
• You may feel particularly 'full up' after eating.
• Heartburn or indigestion

For many years it was thought that stress, poor diet, lifestyle choices (diet, smoking, drinking etc) were the main causes of gastric ulcers and gave rise to stomach ulcer symptoms and indeed stomach ulcers until it was discovered that a simple bug is the main culprit. This test looks for the bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. H pylori is the major cause of stomach ulcers and is implicated with stomach cancer.

 

If you suspect you may have an ulcer or think you have stomach ulcer symptoms it may be useful to perform this test as effective treatment for H pylori infection is readily available from your GP. Treatment is usually in the form of antibiotics and is usually very effective.

How do I perform the test?

Prick your finger using the micro-lancet supplied and put a drop of blood onto the test strip and the buffer solution. Wait for 30 seconds. The result, positive or negative, will display in the window.

Two test lines indicate that you may be infected by helicobacter pylori. You should see your doctor as soon as possible for further examination and treatment..

 

Why is treatment so important?
If you do have an infection by h pylori treatment is fairly straightforward in the form of anti biotic's. Treatment for ulcers is more difficult than treatment for the infection so finding it before it causes ulcers or even stomach cancer is clearly a good idea.

 

Please Note:
If you have already been infected with H pylori but successfully treated in the past the test may yield a positive for possibly a year following treatment as you may still carry antibodies to the infection. Even if you test negetative and you still have concerns or continue to display  symptoms of a stomach ulcer consult your GP for further tests and advice.
