Urine Infection Test

Urine infections symptoms are common but much more so in women than men. Urine infections range from cystitis (a mild but distressing bladder infection) to severe kidney infections.

Urine infection symptoms include

• burning feeling when you urinate
• frequent or intense urge to urinate
• pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen
• cloudy, dark, bloody or strange-smelling urine
• feeling tired or shaky
• chills or fever (a sign the infection may have reached your kidneys

Urine infections should be treated by your doctor.

How do I perform the test?

This urine infection test is suitable for you to do at home and contains two tests. Collect a sample of urine in a clean container and place a test strip into it (ensure all 3 test fields are fully immersed). If protein is present the indicator test panel appears as a blue/green colour. If nitrites are present the indicator test panel appears as a pink colour. If leukocytes are present the indicator test panel appears as a purple colour. If you obtain an abnormal result with the first strip, repeat the test using the second strip.

If a positive result is obtained on any of the strips or if your symptoms persist you should consult your doctor.

Most urine infections are caused by bacteria that come from your own bowel. They generally cause no harm there but may cause infection if they get into other parts of your body like your urinary tract. Bacteria remains around you anus after you pass a stool and sometimes may travel to your urethra and into your bladder. Some bacteria thrive in urine and multiply quickly to cause urine infections. Symptoms follow infection.

Obvious biology and anatomy is such that it is far easier for bacteria to contaminate the urethra in women than for men. Urine infections symptoms are similar in men and women. A course of antibiotics from your doctor will usually clear the infection quickly. Paracetamol or ibuprofen will usually ease any pain, discomfort or fever.
